Post 9-11 or Would this show have happened 4 years ago.

by KeithR

One of the things I am fascinated by is that the central premise of this show revolves around a catastrphic detonation in the middle of New York City. Pre 9-11, this would have been nothing. Movies like Deep Impact and ID4 completely devastated this city and it was of no concern, but right after movies like Spiderman 2 pulled images of the twin towers to keep from offending anyones sensibilities. Schwarzenegger’s film Collateral Damage, which was scheduled for release, was delayed. Others cancelled. It just impresses me that now this type of subject matter can be breached once again and from it we get this wonderful series. Had this show been conceived four years earlier, we may have never seen it.

Oh I don’t imagine it would be too hard to shift the scenery.

It is amazing though how there seems to be a set amount of time that you must wait before bringing something up. The same applies to joking about someone who has died. You need to wait a while.

However, if Heroes revolved around a plan crashing into the city instead of a nuke, the idea still wouldn’t fly. There is a fine line between what is and what is not acceptible and it is amazing how many people know just where that line is.

  2. BB Says:

It just amazes me how Heroes is using the eventual nuking of NYC to lure people to continue watching the show. I think they are playing with people’s emotions in this post-911 world by giving them hope that the heroes in this television series can at least stop the fictional nuke. And I’m sure there are some watchers out there who really really believe Heroes and really think that NYC is/was in danger and the only way to find out if we’re all going to be ok is to tune into the show.

Trust me, don’t give people too much credit.

  3. KeithR Says:

BB: Lol. Nothing is too sacred not to be offered up to the mighty god of ratings.

  4. David Says:

Lol too much credit one thing, but you may be giving them a little bit too little. =)

The whole point of TV and such is to play with people’s emotions… makes you want to watch and makes you enjoy watching.

  5. MamaDuck Says:

There’s definitely a line and I don’t think it would have been as successful pre-911, but you see that in lots of movies and such as well.

  6. Babylinda Says:

Yea it does have a 9/11 vibe I can feel the reasoning of having teh heroes save the nuke in reference to 9/11. I am a model and I held a 9/11 honoring photoshoot and this was one of the pics taken I am teh one in the bottom with the cap! What do all of you get from this?

  8. Aaron Says:

    Kieth,
My take on this is that Americans can take it. Look at 24. After 9/11, it still went forth killing terrorists. As long as the terrorists don’t win in the show, we’re all ok with it.

    Aaron.

  9. KeithR Says:

You make and excellent point. Being triumphant can change you attitude about something pretty quickly.

  10. Kellyann Says:

to be quite honest i dont even think the nuking of ny is the major theme and it doesnt leave me, at the end of each episode, worrying about ny its more the charachters and their individual stories, and it just so happens that its centralised in ny. i think if it was moved to another city the show would stil be a hit!!
