Better Halves (Episode 6 recap)

Holy Crap.
Lotta things going on this episode, so before we get started I’ll fire off my warning:
Beware thar be spoilers beyond here.
Ok, now that we got that out of the way, let us proceed.
Peter and Issac make an appearance ealrly on in the episode in order to give Hiro the message (end of Ep. 5) from future Hiro. They tell Hiro and Ando that they need to save the cheerleader. They also mention that future Hiro spoke english and had a sword. this produced my favorite hunorous quote of the episode: Hiro with his face aglow saying, “I had a sword“. Nice. Peter and Isaac tell Hiro and Ando to come to New York, while they try to figure out where the cheerleader is. they try piecing together Isaacs work, like a comic, but realize that a piece is missing and that Simone probably took it.
Claire’s adoptive father (Horned Rimmed Glasses Man) arranges for Claire (Spontaneous Regeneration Chick) to meet her biological parents, if she wants to. She agrees and he arranges a meeting between them. Her Bio-parents show up and after some akward moments with all four parents in the room she is able to get her bio-parents alone and begins to ask them vague questions about family medical history and such in hopes that they might reveal to her that they too have powers. Nothing really comes of it and as the bio-parents are leaving, Claire is in the kitchen with her adoptive mother feeling rather anticlimatic. HRHM walks the bio-parents out to the car and as they are getting ready to leave it is revealed that these are not Claire’s bio-parents, but rather employees/associates of HRGM brought in to apease Claire.
After getting Peter’s message, Ando and Hiro prepare to depart for New York, but are stopped by the gentleman that they cheated in the casino. He “makes them a deal they can’t refuse” and takes them with him to an underground, high stakes poker game in order to get them to help him win his money back. It starts off with the typical Ando and Hiro, Hiro using his abilities to stop time to give Ando the best cards. Time restarts and Ando looks at the cards and sees that Hiro has given him a straight flush and bids $1000. Hiro, stunned by the by falls down and when Ando bends over to help him, he sees that the man they are playing has a gun pointed at him under the table. Ando states that he needs to use the restroom and needs Hiro to come with him (humorous moment). When they get in the bathroom Ando is explaining to Hiro about the gun and says that they need to leave, when a muffled voice outside the bathroom door says, “who invited her?”. the sound of gunfire and violence sounds out and when hiro tries to stop time, he is unable to. It gets quite an as the peek out into the room, bodies are strewn about the room, ripped to shreds. Hiro is distraught that he couldn’t save the men. When they get back to the car Hiro has a minor meltdown at his inability to save the men and Ando tells him that this is the beginning of the story and that if he could do everything now it wouldn’t be interesting when they made it into a movie. He also tells Hiro that when he gets stronger maybe he can come back in time and fix it, like a do-over. This cheers Hiro up immensely.

Niki is in her house under protection from the possiblity of her husband D.L. Hawkins might show up. Niki hears something and gets up and walks around the house, when D.L. comes out of nowhere and grabs her. After a few tense moments with some witty banter and cap tension, D.L. explains to Niki that some woman had set him up and that the thinks he has a way of finding out who it is, then he can clear his name. After some false protestation, Niki goes to bed with her husband. when they wake up in the morning he says she must be tired because later in the night she slipped out of the house. this appears to be a ‘crazy Niki’ moment. D.L. and Micah share some quality time together over comics and when Micah asks him how he got out of jail he tells Micah that he has a secret. Micah asks him if it’s like Superman and D.L. says yes. Niki sneaks D.L. out of the house so that he can go find these people that can help him. When the get to the place it is unlocked and when they go in we see the room that Ando and Hiro had been playing cards in earlier, dead bodies and all. D.L. and Niki take off back to the house and Niki tries to tell D.L. about what is happening to her. She has one of her moments and tells Micah that she feels ill and is going to lay down When she gets in the room she’s freaking out because she is positive that she is the one that killed the men at the card game. When she gets in the room alone, she has an actual confrontation with her other self and it explains to her that she is the one who set D.L. up and killed his crew. the alter also tells her where the missing $2million D.L. had stolen is hidden. The alter tells her that if she doesn’t take the money and get out of town D.L. will take the money and Micah and leave her. She agrees and gets the money out of it’s hiding place in the attic. After she has dropped out of the attic with the money D.L. sees her with the case ans realizes that she is the one that set him up. He tells her he is taking the money and Micah and leaving. Niki proceeds to whack him with the case sending him hurtling across the room into a piece of furniture, shattering it completely. Micah comes in and asks whats going on and she tells him that she and Daddy are rearranging the furniture. As he leaves she shuts the door and turns back to D.L., who is no longer there. Niki stalks around the room with her back to the wall, D.l. comes out of the wall Kitty Pryde style and grabs her. They tussle and they endup on the bed with Niki on top pummeling D.L. Micah runs into the room and as Niki is distracted D.L. Pheases his hand into her chest and with the other grabs her throat and she collapses. D.L. grabs Micah and the money and leaves.
Mohinder and Eden are discussing his run-in with Peter earlier and he tells her about Hiro’s time travellling ability, and Isaac’s ability to see the future as well as Hiro’s message ‘to save the cheerleader’. He is packing up his belongings to take his fathers ashes back to India. Eden tries to convince him that he should stay and follow up on his fathers research. He declines and as he is leaving she tells him he’ll be back and kisses him.
HRGM (you know you can’t get enough of this sexy beast) is on the phone and you realize he is speaking with Eden and she is passing along all of the information she has gotten from Mohinder. (Chrispian nailed Eden as a bad guy two seconds after her introduction. Nice one man.) He tells her not to worry about the others , but to get the precog (Isaac).
Isaac is looking at the paintings in his studio and rubs one of the paintings to reveal ‘the mark’ on the shoulder of a painting of Niki, Peter having left to find the missing painting. the doorbell rings and Eden ist at the door.
End of episode.

This was a great episode. I loved Hiro’s reaction to the idea of a “do-over”.

Yeah that perked him up pretty good. I loved his reaction to the idea of his future self having a sword. It was a great episode. I’m glad they focused on fewer characters this episode and made it more robust for certain individuals. Epidoses when they load them up with every character, they seem to jump around alot.

I had to go to NBC.com to see the “2-minute replay” because I fell asleep at the very very end! Therefore missing the whole DL/Niki scene. So are we assuming she’s dead? I never thought of the Eden thing, but it makes sense. She’s just too sweet and too much in the right place at the right time to not be a bad guy… Keeps things interesting!

I DVR’d it and watched it twice. I’m quite the Heroes junkie.I thinks Niki is fine. It’s too early in the show to knock her off and we’re just now finding out more about her.
Chrispian pegged Eden as a plant in our first conversation after she initially appeared. He’s got that crazy x-files conspiracy mind thing going and pick up on stuff like that quickly. After he pointed it out to me it kind of fell into place for me. I’m just curious to see if she has any abilities.

I hate to burst everyone’s bubble on this episode, but I feel that it really didn’t accomplish much. I mean, the only thing we really found out is Niki is friggin nuts (and I suspect she’ll be a villain if she isn’t one already), Hiro paused time a couple of times and was upset at himself for not saving the thugs, and the cheerleader’s bios (as she calls them) really weren’t her biological parents… very boring episode for me. The other ones were much better IMO.

I’ll have to disagree. a new character was revealed, some secrets were revealed and some new questions arose. While it wasn’t the most action packed episode, it was a nice character development story. Although the Niki/D.L. fight was pretty sweet.

Yea, all 10 seconds of the fight. lol
